The charges name two other former election commissioners along with Awal. Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and KM Nurul Huda also face the same accusations. Police added more serious crimes to the case on June 25. The new charges cover rebellion against the state and stealing government money.

Awal ran the election commission during 2024 when the country held its 12th parliamentary vote. Critics called that election fake because only one major party took part. The ruling Awami League and its partner groups were the main candidates who ran for office.
