A court sent Bangladesh's former election chief to prison Sunday after he finished three days of police questioning. Kazi Habibul Awal faces charges about problems with the country's last three national votes. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiak made the jail decision when police brought Awal to court. Police asked the judge to keep Awal locked up. His lawyers wanted him released on bail but the court said no. Police arrested Awal on June 25 near Moghbazar area of the capital city. A court had ordered him to spend three days answering police questions about the voting case. The case started when BNP party member Salah Uddin Khan filed complaints against 24 people. Khan accused them of stealing votes during elections. The charges name two other former election commissioners along with Awal. Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and KM Nurul Huda also face the same accusations. Police added more serious crimes to the case on June 25. The new charges cover rebellion against the state and stealing government money. Awal ran the election commission during 2024 when the country held its 12th parliamentary vote. Critics called that election fake because only one major party took part. The ruling Awami League and its partner groups were the main candidates who ran for office.
