Kenya's Second Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sent Inspector General Douglas Kanja a harsh letter Monday claiming police helped with attempts to kill him. He said criminal groups had been working with police officers against him since late 2024. Gachagua accused security agencies of watching his movements through surveillance after his relationship with President William Ruto fell apart.
Their political alliance broke down when Gachagua publicly criticized Ruto's inner circle last year. Parliament removed him from office through impeachment on what he called fake charges. He described several violent incidents where his convoy faced attacks as officers stood watching without helping.
Gachagua warned these threats come from a plan to eliminate him politically. He compared current tensions to problems before the 2007 election violence that brought international attention. The former deputy demanded the arrest of those responsible for attacking him.
He also wants his security detail back immediately. Gachagua told the police chief he would hold him personally responsible if any more violence happened. The government has not answered these accusations from the letter that was also sent to foreign diplomats.
