Farmers who benefit from the Chain Change Project under GIRAV recently gathered for a full-day meeting about workplace training focused on social and environmental rules. They met at the Regional Agricultural Directorate in Kerewan, North Bank Region, where they heard a Phase 1 presentation explaining the Labor Act 2023. The GIRAV project's Social Development Specialist, Fafanding Katri Kinteh, spoke in detail about World Bank Environment and Social Standard procedures and how they affect the GIRAV project. He told everyone that this project costs millions of dollars, started in 2021, and runs until 2028. The Government of The Gambia works together with the World Bank on this project to help increase food production and create opportunities for women and young people. Kinteh explained that they have a system to handle complaints quickly. This helps keep the project running smoothly by fixing any problems that might come up for people affected by the project. GIRAV is building agro-logistics centers in Maka Farafenni and Wassu right now. These centers will cut down on food waste after harvest, make transportation easier, and improve how information about farm products and markets gets shared. Governor Lamin Saidykhan discussed the government's desire to ensure everyone has enough food. He said the GIRAV project, funded by both the government and the World Bank, will help reach food security goals and support women and young people through matching grants. The governor promised his office would fully back the project as it proceeds. Abdou Saidy serves as Principal Labor Officer and described this training as important for teaching people about the Labor Act 2023, Injury Compensation Act 1990, and Factory Act 1990. He mentioned that the Labor Act aims to protect worker health and wellness. Saidy praised GIRAV for working closely with the Department of Labor to spread awareness about worker rights and protection from mistreatment. The Regional Agricultural Director for North Bank Region, Alasan Minteh, believed the training would make workers stronger in communities that benefit from the project. Musa Sillah Kerr Jarga and Fatou Ceesay from Daru Barakat called the project essential, noting it would empower women and young people. Female participants who received help from the project talked about how successful their vegetable garden programs had been and stressed how secure this support made them feel.
