Demba Jallow from The Gambia stepped up as the new high commissioner for the Gambia River Basin Development Organisation last Friday. The handover ceremony happened at OMVG headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. He replaced Lansana Fofana from Guinea. His term runs four years with the option for one renewal. Jallow talked with The Alkamba Times about his job duties. He helps create strategies and action plans that follow guidelines from the Conference of Heads of State and Government. He must also implement policies and programs the Council of Ministers approves. He manages budgets they adopt, working alongside special committees under OMVG rules. The new commissioner works with a secretary general and four directors. Together, they keep stakeholders informed about OMVG programs and ensure they develop according to the timelines member states set. Between council meetings, Jallow represents the entire organization. He makes decisions based on council directives within his authority limits. His background includes double bachelor's degrees in economics and mathematics. He earned master's degrees from St Mary's University in Halifax, Canada, and the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. His resume features certificates in energy pricing and regulation, among other qualifications. Jallow ran corporate planning at Nawec from 2009 through 2017. Starting in 2019, he served as a regular expert during OMVG council meetings. By 2018, he led the OMVG energy project team for The Gambia. Later, he moved to the Dakar office as head of the studies and planning division. He then became director of environment and sustainable development at OMVG. He held this role successfully until The Gambia nominated him as high commissioner.
