Gangs ambush Haitian soldiers near Port au Prince

Three Haitian soldiers died when gangs attacked them on Sunday near Port-au-Prince. Kenyan police helped fight back against the gang attack as part of their international mission. The area called Kenscoff has seen heavy fighting lately between law enforcement groups and the Viv Ansanm gang coalition. This violence shows how difficult it remains for Haitian authorities and foreign troops to control the situation. The soldiers died with weapons in their hands during the battle.

These brave soldiers represented their nation as defenders who made the ultimate sacrifice. They traveled in an unarmored vehicle, taking reinforcements to a dangerous area, when armed men targeted them. Videos showed other soldiers pulling bodies from the truck after the attack. Kenyan officers later joined the Haitian National Police in hunting down gang members, injuring many of them. The multinational mission tries to restore order as violence keeps growing worse.

Gangs currently control about 85 percent of Haiti's capital city. Foreign help has often failed to bring lasting peace to Haiti throughout its history. Kenya agreed with the United States last year to send troops to Haiti. The Kenyan forces arrived in June 2024 but have not reduced gang violence much. More than 23,000 people lost their homes during one week in March alone. Supply lines across Haiti face serious disruptions from all this fighting.
