Ghana sanitation day is back this May

The government plans to bring back National Sanitation Day on May 3, 2025. Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim wants churches to tell members about fighting poor sanitation during Easter weekend services. He announced this during visits to several Christian organizations seeking their help. People must stop work until 10 AM that day, and all shops will be closed for cleaning activities.

This push comes as cholera has killed 49 people since October, with 581 cases reported across 58 districts. Ibrahim believes everyone needs to work together against environmental problems affecting the entire nation. He mentioned that fishermen are finding more plastic than fish, which shows how serious the situation has become. Instead of banning plastics right away, officials want people to recycle more using existing facilities.

Christian Council Chairman Dr. Hilliard Dogbe promised complete support for the campaign. He called environmental care both a civic duty and a religious obligation. The nationwide cleanup will include partnerships with waste companies to clear gutters and collect trash. Traditional leaders and community groups will help spread the message about keeping surroundings clean.
