Google rolled its dedicated generative AI performance reports out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, after a phased June launch. The change finally gives site owners a first-party view of how often their pages appear inside Google’s generative search features. The wider brand visibility in AI answers problem still stretches beyond Google, so this report is useful without being the whole picture. Generative AI Search Console reporting tells you where Google is showing your pages inside AI features, not whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or another system is mentioning you. [HEADING=2]The dedicated report measures exposure[/HEADING] Google Search Console AI Mode data now has a dedicated performance view alongside Search Console AI Overview data. Google also provides a separate generative AI report for Discover. The Search report is built around impressions. It shows which pages appeared, the countries where those impressions came from, the device type, and changes over time by date. Search Console AI Overview impressions therefore mean a link from your site appeared inside one of Google’s supported generative features. They do not automatically mean somebody clicked it. Google calls the view its Generative AI performance report. The Google Search Console generative AI report does not expose an AI-only click total, click-through rate, position, or query table. Those metrics have not vanished. Google still counts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks, impressions, and position inside the ordinary Web performance report. This makes the generative AI view a filter on activity Google already counts rather than a second pile of traffic. Adding its impressions to your normal Web impressions would double count part of the same activity. A clean AI search analytics dashboard should keep that relationship obvious instead of presenting the two totals as separate audiences. [HEADING=2]The normal query report contains another clue[/HEADING] AI Mode queries in Search Console behave a little strangely in the main performance report. A follow-up question inside AI Mode counts as a new query, and the new response gets its own impression, position, and click data. A conversation can therefore produce several query rows rather than one long session. This matters when figuring out how to track AI search traffic. Short fragments or conversational refinements can appear in the normal query table, but Google does not give each row an AI Mode label. You can notice patterns, but you cannot cleanly filter the query list into classic searches and AI conversations. The distinction also keeps measurement claims sane. Controlled generative-engine visibility experiments can measure how prominently a source appears inside generated answers, while Search Console measures Google-specific impressions using its own logging rules. Neither number should be quietly renamed “AI traffic.” AI search analytics tools often try to combine citations, mentions, rankings, referrals, and search data into one dashboard. Useful, sure, but those are different measurements. No dashboard can turn an impression into a click or prove that an AI response influenced a sale just because the same page appeared in Google’s report. [HEADING=2]Page trends are the most useful starting point[/HEADING] Google Search Console AI visibility is most useful at page level. Watch which URLs gain or lose generative impressions, compare countries and devices, and check whether changes line up with major content edits, indexing problems, or shifts in your normal Search performance. What people call a Search Console AI Overview report is actually the combined generative AI view, and its page data can still expose URLs that repeatedly surface in AI answers even when their ordinary search traffic looks modest. Those pages may contain facts, explanations, product information, or source material Google finds useful for generated responses. Treat the pattern as a lead for investigation, not automatic proof that a particular optimization caused it. Tracking AI search traffic in GA4 is a separate job because analytics starts after somebody reaches your site. Search Console tells you about Google search exposure and logged clicks, while GA4 can help with sessions and conversions after arrival. Combining the two gives you more context without pretending either system sees the entire journey. If the generative report is missing, low impression volume can be the reason. Google says properties may not show the report when they have not received enough generative AI impressions. Excluding a site through Search Console’s generative AI control can also remove it from these features. An AI search analytics platform still needs other sources if you care about non-Google systems. Google AI Search Console is strongest as first-party evidence of visibility inside Google’s own AI surfaces. Use it for what it actually records, and the report becomes much more useful than trying to make it answer questions it was never designed to answer.
