Betty Amongin visited the Acholi leader's home on Thursday to talk about chief matters. The Labor Minister told people that the government only recognizes Rwot David Onen Acana II as the main Acholi chief. She said Uganda has approved 17 cultural leaders across the country. Amongin explained that her office heard about fights between different chiefs but cannot step into these problems. She asked all Acholi chiefs to work together for their people. The government raised monthly payments for cultural leaders from 5 million to 60 million shillings. Each kingdom and chiefdom will receive two new cars to help with their duties. Amongin made these announcements during her trip to the palace in Gulu City. The minister wanted to clear up confusion about who leads the Acholi people. She hoped her visit would bring peace to the area. Rwot Acana thanked the government for supporting his leadership and the Acholi community. He said he would talk with other chiefs if they wanted to discuss their differences. The paramount chief appreciated the extra money and promised vehicles. His spokesperson Michael Otim described their work teaching families about growing food. The cultural institution wants people to farm more crops and escape poverty. Otim asked the government to build a new palace for the Acholi leader. He said the current building looks old and needs replacement. The cultural institution also needs better offices for workers. Otim believes a modern palace would match the importance of Acholi culture.
