Kenya Extends Task Force Term for Pending Bills Review.

Kenya's Treasury Secretary John Mbadi has extended the term of the pending bills task force by six months, starting October 1, 2024.

The task force, led by former Auditor General Edward Ouko, has cleared bills worth Sh206 billion. These approved payments cover bills under Sh10 million.

"The team has analyzed Sh474 billion from the submitted Sh665 billion worth of bills," Mbadi told the Star newspaper. He added that some bills proved fictitious or included extra charges like interest and penalties.

Former Treasury Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u created the 18-member team in October 2023. The national government's pending bills reached Sh481 billion by June 2022.

Tirop Kosgey serves as deputy chair. Other members include Ali Abdulrazaq, Hesbon Omollo, Eric Onyango Gumbo, and Patience Mulondo. James Washington Munene Gitonga, Bernard Ndungu, Nicholas Munywoki Mutua, and James Kung'u also joined the team.

The committee's duties include examining national government bills from June 2005 to June 2022. They must establish clear criteria for analyzing these claims and recommend payment solutions.

The task force term runs through March 31, 2025, according to the official gazette notice. Mbadi stated the government plans to begin paying the approved bills.
