Four prison guards face murder charges after they beat a man to death at the New Government Complex in Harare. The court sent Nqobile Dube, Gladman Faith Makoni, Godfrey Damu, and Munashe Arkins Zvavambire to jail until their bail hearing on Monday. These Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officers worked security at the building when they attacked someone they thought broke in. The attack happened on March 6 between 6 and 7 PM at the corner of Central Avenue and Simon Muzenda Street. Kandemiiri Jeffreys came to see his uncle Kandemiiri Malvern, who works there. The security guards told him to leave right away. When Jeffreys walked down the stairs to the second floor, he met these four guards who started a fight with him. Court records show Dube kicked Jeffreys many times in the stomach. Makoni, Damu, and Zvavambire punched different parts of his body. They kept beating him when they reached the basement of the building. Dube kicked his stomach again and jumped on him as he lay on the ground. Damu hit his legs with a broom making Jeffreys roll around in pain. Other prison officers saw what happened and stopped their coworkers from hurting him more. They made Jeffreys leave the building. He walked to Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus but fell unconscious there. Kind strangers carried him to his house in Mabvuku, where he told his mother about the bad pain inside his body. She rushed him to a nearby clinic. Medical staff sent him straight to Parirenyatwa Hospital because his injuries looked serious. Doctors kept him there for seven days, but he died on March 14 anyway. The medical examiner found out he died from blunt force trauma that caused a terrible infection in his abdomen. Police used this evidence to charge all four security guards with murder because the injuries came directly from their beating.
