People Worry As Big Houses Turn Into Small Apartments.

People in Harare are scared about what might happen to their nice, quiet neighborhoods. In five years, these areas might change a lot. City helpers called councilors let builders build many small houses where big houses used to be. Some people think the councilors take money from builders to let this happen.

The city of Harare has not given out land for building small houses for seven years. This makes things messy because councilors look at places where builders want to make small houses. These councilors do not know much about building houses, but they still say yes or no to the plans.

Mr. Addmore Nhekairo works for the city and helps with housing. He says he does not give out land for these small houses. He knows some people might pay councilors money to build, but thinks many people need places to live.

People who live in places like Mt Pleasant and Groombridge do not want these changes. They want the city to make better water pipes and sewers first. They think about their children and wonder if there will be enough schools for everyone.

In Newlands, many new apartments cause problems with electricity. Many families use power at the same time, breaking the electricity lines. People dig more wells for water because there are many new houses, making the water under the ground harder to reach. The people tell the city about these problems, but nothing changes.
