Harare woman sleeps on streets after husband brings lover home

A Harare woman had to sleep on the streets for five days after her partner brought his pregnant girlfriend into their marital home. Mercy Mainoti and Isaac Muinyani had been married for more than ten years before their relationship fell apart.

Mercy told officials at the Harare Civil Court that Isaac attacked her and forced her out of their residence. She explained that her husband introduced a pregnant woman as his new second wife, then began hitting her and pushed her outside. She remained homeless for nearly a week because Isaac refused to let her return, claiming he couldn't live with someone unable to have children.

Mercy asked the court for protection against her spouse. She mentioned struggling with the emotional hurt from his betrayal but still having feelings for him despite everything that happened. When given a chance to respond, Isaac didn't challenge any claims made against him but simply stated he no longer had affection for Mercy.

He admitted finding another partner and declared he no longer wanted Mercy as his wife. Magistrate Meenal Naratom sided with Mercy by issuing a protection order. The magistrate emphasized that Isaac's behavior was unacceptable and that he needed to understand there were consequences for his actions toward his first wife.
