UDA secretary general Hassan Omar demanded peace after Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein passed away Wednesday evening. The Islamic leader received his final burial at Seif Halwa Kikowani cemetery Thursday evening in Mombasa. Hussein had occupied the Chief Kadhi position since July 2023 when he replaced retiring Sheikh Ahmed Mudhar. The previous officeholder had served twelve years before stepping down. Chief Justice Martha Koome must select a replacement through the Judicial Service Commission. The JSC will declare the position empty before advertising the opening to potential candidates. Commission members will likely appoint the most senior Kadhi as temporary leader during the search process. Applicants must submit their credentials before facing public interviews following the shortlisting process. The JSC will pick their preferred candidate who gets officially gazetted as the new Chief Kadhi. Omar insisted the commission should work without outside pressure during their selection deliberations. Omar blasted the Supreme Court ruling from June 30 that granted inheritance rights to children born outside marriage to Muslim fathers. The UDA leader declared Islamic law cannot bend to modern society opinions or changing circumstances. He accused justices of judicial overreach by interfering with religious matters beyond their expertise. Omar warned against any Supreme Court attempts to rewrite or overturn Quran teachings. Mombasa businessman Mbarak Bashatir echoed these sentiments while condemning the controversial inheritance decision.
