A court sentenced Ramadhan Ngobi to prison for one year after he stole school money. The 58-year-old headteacher took 176 million shillings from Nakazigo Primary School's accounts. He was supposed to use the cash to build two classrooms and toilet facilities for students, but Ngobi spent the construction funds on himself instead of helping children learn. Magistrate Christopher Opit also banned him from government jobs for ten years. The judge ordered Ngobi to pay back every shilling he stole from the school budget. Officials will put the returned money into a special government account at the Bank of Uganda. Court records show Ngobi broke two laws when he misused public funds and abused his position. His prison sentences will happen at the same time rather than one after another. Schools across Uganda lose millions each year because leaders steal education money. Government reports reveal that corrupt officials take 18 percent of all school grants annually. Education theft costs Uganda about 244 billion shillings every year, according to anti-corruption investigators. Students suffer when principals and teachers steal money meant for books and buildings. Police recently arrested another college principal and several district headteachers for similar crimes. The government fights back against education corruption through special investigation units.
