Holy Leader Revisits Khaibar Poisoning and Marriage

His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued talking about the Battle of Khaibar. He described an attempt to kill the Holy Prophet Muhammad through poisoned meat after the battle ended. The Holy Prophet showed amazing kindness toward the Jewish people despite this attack. He let them stay in Khaibar under a peace treaty and forgave them for their actions against Muslims.

A Jewish soldier's wife named Zainab cooked roasted meat as a gift for the Holy Prophet. Several companions sat with him when she brought this food. Everyone took some meat at first. The Holy Prophet quickly told everyone to stop eating because he realized the meat contained poison. Unfortunately, he and some companions had already tasted it by then. One companion named Hazrat Bishr noticed something wrong with the food but ate it anyway after seeing the Prophet try some. Bishr became very sick and died about a year later from these effects.

Some stories say the Holy Prophet swallowed the meat completely, while other accounts mention that he only tasted it before removing it from his mouth. The Holy Prophet called for the woman who brought the poisoned food and asked if she had added poison. She admitted doing this because of what happened to her people. Her plan aimed to test whether Muhammad was just a regular king or truly a prophet who would receive divine warning about the danger.

Different stories exist about what punishment the woman received. Some say the Holy Prophet ordered her execution. More reliable accounts from Sahih Muslim report that he completely forgave her without any punishment. The Second Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, believed historical records show the Prophet forgave her entirely.

Some accounts suggest the Prophet's death years later might have resulted from the lasting effects of this poison. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Hazrat A'ishah narrated that during his final illness, the Holy Prophet mentioned feeling ongoing health problems ever since the poisoning incident at Khaibar. Many scholars have concluded his death came from this attempted murder, making him a supreme martyr. However, these explanations seem unnecessary since prophets already hold the ranks of martyr and truthful ones due to their spiritual status.

It makes little sense to claim the Holy Prophet died from poison effects. Such claims would give opponents chances to mock his prophetic status. The poisoning attempt actually served as proof of his truthfulness when he survived it. Those who witnessed this survival accepted him as a genuine prophet because they saw it as a miracle. Therefore, nobody should conclude the poison caused his death many years later.

Further research shows the Holy Prophet never swallowed the poisoned meat but only briefly chewed it before spitting it out. The poison likely burned or damaged his mouth. This injury probably caused discomfort whenever he ate anything afterward. The pain he mentioned during his final illness referred to this mouth irritation rather than systemic poisoning effects throughout his body.

The Battle of Khaibar also connects to the Holy Prophet's marriage to Hazrat Safiyyah. After the battle, captives were distributed among Muslims, and a companion named Hazrat Dihyah received Safiyyah, daughter of Huyayy bin Akhtab. Another companion told the Holy Prophet that her high rank among Jewish tribes made her unsuitable for anyone except the Prophet himself. The Holy Prophet then asked someone to bring her to him and told Dihyah he could take someone else instead.

The Holy Prophet freed Safiyyah immediately and gave her two clear options: marry him or return freely to her tribe. Safiyyah herself chose marriage to the Holy Prophet. She later admitted she initially hated the Prophet because her father and husband had both died fighting against Muslims. However, during her first meeting with him, his excellent character began changing her heart. By the time that first meeting ended, she considered him the most beloved person in all of Arabia.

During their journey back to Madinah, the Holy Prophet came out of his tent one morning and found Hazrat Ayyub Ansari standing guard with his sword drawn. When asked why he stood there, Ayyub explained he worried about the newly converted Jewish woman. Since her family members had died fighting Muslims, he feared she might harm the Prophet and watched all night to protect him. The Holy Prophet prayed that Allah would protect Ayyub just as Ayyub had protected him.

The Holy Prophet noticed bruising near Safiyyah's eye and asked what happened. She explained she had dreamed about the moon coming from Madinah and falling into her lap shortly before the Khaibar events. When she told her Jewish husband about this dream, he struck her face. Her husband claimed the dream meant she wanted to marry the King of Yathrib, referring to Muhammad.

Some critics make false claims about these Khaibar events and the marriage to Safiyyah based only on hatred toward the Holy Prophet. Looking at the full context of Jewish crimes, the Prophet's actions appear measured and appropriate. He demonstrated exceptional morality by forgiving the Jewish people and allowing them to continue living on their land. Most accusations against him come from people who misunderstand his life and character. His consistent character proves his truthfulness, as mentioned in the Holy Quran.

Any claim that the Holy Prophet married Safiyyah merely for her beauty contradicts his established character. Beauty never determined his marriage decisions. He married widows and women older than himself throughout his life. His marriages centered on faith considerations and building connections with different people groups. Furthermore, he let Safiyyah decide whether to marry him or return to her community. Her personal choice to stay with him disproves any notion that he pursued this marriage based on physical attraction.

The Promised Messiah explained that every action of the Holy Prophet came from divine guidance because of his special spiritual rank. The Holy Quran confirms this when it quotes him saying that his prayers, sacrifices, life, and death all belong to Allah, Lord of all Worlds. People should remember this verse when examining different aspects of the Prophet's life instead of making baseless accusations with no merit.

His Holiness mentioned that Ramadan would start in two days. He prayed for everyone to take full advantage of this opportunity through extensive prayers and worship. He advised everyone to pray actively and work hard toward spiritual goals during this special month of fasting and devotion to God.

His Holiness announced he would offer funeral prayers for Chaudhary Muhammad Anwar Ghias from Rabwah, who recently died. His son serves as National President and Missionary Charge for the Community in Kenya. Chaudhary ranked among the first Ahmadis in his village. Authorities once imprisoned him because of his religious beliefs. He regularly said his prayers, made financial contributions to the community and showed many good qualities throughout his life. His Holiness prayed that Allah might grant him forgiveness and mercy and give patience and strength to his children during their time of loss.
