A powerful earthquake shook Myanmar yesterday, killing at least 144 people and hurting hundreds more, according to an army official. The 7.7 magnitude quake sent strong tremors through nearby countries. In Thailand, an unfinished building fell, leaving 81 construction workers trapped under the rubble. Thai officials have started searching for survivors among the wreckage. People shared pictures showing broken buildings across Myanmar. One video captured water from a Bangkok rooftop swimming pool splashing over the edges as the tall building swayed back and forth. Myanmar faces challenges with information flow since the military took control in 2021 after overthrowing the government. The earthquake hit around noon local time, causing widespread damage in Mandalay, the former royal capital city. Videos show parts of Mandalay Palace badly damaged and fires burning at Mandalay University. Myanmar's ruling military has asked other countries for help - something they rarely do. However, the opposition National Unity Government wants any aid sent through local networks instead of government channels. Seven people died when a high building collapsed in Thailand. Countries like China also felt the earthquake's effects. Rescue teams keep looking for the 81 missing workers in Bangkok. Kevin Riley from Essex, UK, described his experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand, saying he noticed things moving during lunch. He first thought someone was moving tables until he looked up and saw everything shaking. The British tourist explained the lights swung back and forth, and the shaking continued for about two and a half minutes. When he returned to his hotel, he noticed pieces of the building had fallen off the front. From his room, he saw the hotel pool area completely messed up. Riley said even hundreds of miles from Myanmar, they still felt the earthquake's incredible power.
