Leaders from African countries asked the world to help millions of people who had to leave their homes. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu speaks for a group called IGAD that works across East Africa. He made this request during World Refugee Day to draw attention to the crisis. The Horn of Africa region takes care of more refugees than anywhere else on Earth. Over 6 million displaced people live there right after being forced from their countries. Fighting inside Sudan created the biggest humanitarian emergency the world has seen recently. Dr. Gebeyehu wants everyone to work harder at helping people who are suffering. He praised countries that welcome refugees even though they face their problems. Uganda does the best job at letting displaced people move around freely and find work. Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and South Sudan also open their doors to people seeking safety. Climate change makes the refugee situation worse each year. Droughts and floods push more families away from their homes. These weather disasters happen alongside wars and fighting. African leaders want lasting solutions rather than just temporary help. The World Bank supports projects that give refugees jobs and strengthen local communities. IGAD promised to keep supporting displaced people from Sudan and other troubled areas. Dr. Gebeyehu called on rich nations to do more for refugees. He believes helping displaced people can actually make the whole region stronger and more peaceful. The courage of refugee families deserves better responses from world leaders. African countries cannot handle this massive challenge alone.
