Immigration officers nabbed more than 1,000 business owners across Malaysia for hiring illegal workers. The crackdown happened between January and early July this year. Department chief Zakaria Shaaban announced that his team caught 1,005 employers red-handed. Most of these business owners were Malaysian citizens who gave jobs to foreigners without proper papers. The busted employers ran restaurants, factories, and shops around the country. Immigration teams have been busy conducting thousands of raids nationwide. Officers carried out 6,913 operations during the first half of 2024. They checked nearly 100,000 foreign workers and arrested over 26,000 people for breaking immigration laws. Zakaria said his department already hit 70 percent of their yearly target. He feels confident they will smash their goals before December arrives. The immigration chief promised tough enforcement will continue without any mercy for rule breakers. His officers keep watch over 200 problem areas across Malaysia where illegal workers often hide. Many of these hotspots are located far from cities and towns. The department refuses to ease up on their mission to catch immigration violators. They plan to keep raiding businesses and checking documents until the problem stops. Immigration officials also organized a fun run event to connect with the public. More than 800 people joined the race around their Kuala Lumpur office building. Participants could choose between running five kilometers or ten kilometers. The department wants to keep hosting these community events to build better relationships with ordinary citizens.
