India's Massive Investments Flood Zimbabwe's Economy

India Lauds Zimbabwe Partnership at National Day Event.

India praised Zimbabwe's leadership for building strong ties between the nations at India's National Day celebration in Harare on Thursday. The event marked 45 years of diplomatic relations.

Indian Ambassador Bramha Kumar highlighted centuries-old connections dating to the Munhumutapa Kingdom era. "Indian merchants traded textiles, minerals, and metals with Zimbabwe," Kumar said. "Royal family members traveled to India for education."

He pointed to Dom Miguel, a 17th-century prince and heir to the Mutapa throne, who studied in Goa. "A chapel pillar there bears his inscription, showing his scholarly achievement," Kumar said.

Indian private sector investments in Zimbabwe have reached US$600 million. These ventures created 5,000 direct jobs and supported 10,000 more indirect positions. "Indian companies keep expanding here," Kumar said. President Mnangagwa opened a new facility last month.

Zimbabwe's Deputy Foreign Minister Sheilla Chikomo traced the friendship to early trade links. "From the 14th century, merchants exchanged gold, ivory, textiles, and precious metals. Royal family members became traders and cultural ambassadors in India."

She noted Vice President Constantino Chiwenga's August 2024 visit to the India-Africa Business Conclave. The meeting strengthened economic partnerships between the nations.

India backed Zimbabwe's independence struggle and maintains support through various projects. The country helped establish 17 technology centers across Zimbabwe, upgrading them with modern machinery in 2022.

The growing Indian community in Zimbabwe contributes to business, education, and cultural exchange. Both nations express optimism about future cooperation and investment opportunities.
