His education includes several advanced degrees from Kenyan schools. He studied Forensic Psychology, criminology, and Theology at Kenya Methodist University. Mount Kenya University awarded him a Master's degree focusing on Governance and Ethics. Mutuma helped children through Plan International and represented young people with Habitat for Humanity across his region. His prison service included work on human rights issues and programs helping inmates rebuild their lives.
