Jamaica approves regularization plan for undocumented Dominicans

Jamaica just gave thousands of Dominican workers a huge break. The island nation decided to help people from the Dominican Republic become legal residents. Ambassador Angie Martínez spent more than a year fighting for this deal. Government officials finally said yes after months of tough talks. The Dominican Embassy called this a major win for human rights.

More than 2,000 Dominicans live across Jamaica without proper papers. Most of them work hard jobs around Montego Bay. They build hotels, serve tourists, and keep the hospitality business running strong. Many families have lived there for years without legal protection. The new program will let them apply for official status.

Ambassador Martínez made this her top priority before leaving office. She already scored other big victories for her country. Dominicans can visit Jamaica without visas thanks to her work. Direct flights between Santo Domingo and Kingston started under her watch. Dominican farmers can sell more products to both Jamaica and the Bahamas.

The Embassy plans to help every person through the application process. Dominican officials will provide free legal advice and technical support. Jamaica's immigration agency worked closely with Martinez to create the program. The Ministry of National Security also backed the humanitarian effort. This marks a historic moment for both Caribbean nations.

Martinez says the victory shows what good diplomacy can achieve. She focused on protecting Dominican citizens living abroad during her time as ambassador. The regularization process will give families peace of mind and legal security. Both countries benefit from stronger ties and better cooperation.
