Exiled Leader Jammeh Says He Will Return to The Gambia. Former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh said he won't face jail time and plans to come back home. He made these bold claims in a voice message from Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday. "They can wait until I arrive. We'll see who goes to jail," Jammeh told his followers through WhatsApp. He left The Gambia in 2017 after losing the elections. People accuse him of hurting citizens and stealing money during his 23-year rule. Jammeh fired Yahya Tamba, the leader of his party. He said he would run the APRC party himself from January 22, 2025. "The party keeps sinking each day," Jammeh said. He thanked Tamba but said the change had to happen. The former president attacked the current state of his country. He said hospitals have become places of death and that crime runs wild without anyone facing punishment. "The Gambia used to make people proud. It has turned into a joke," he said. Jammeh believes some people want to stop his return through magic. He said they visit spiritual leaders in Guinea, Benin, Mali, and Bissau. Yet he promised his comeback would mark an important day for The Gambia. His words come as he faces serious charges at home. Many want him to answer for his actions during his time as president, but Jammeh stays firm. He swore seven times he would return and urged his enemies not to run away. The announcement shakes up Gambian politics. Jammeh kept quiet about another group in his party led by Fabakary Tombing Jatta. He left the rest of his party leaders in place but said anyone could leave or join without rules.
