President William Ruto nominated Cheptumo to lead the ministry, which had been vacant following last year's Cabinet dismissal. The appointment committee had previously rejected Soi Lang'at for this position. Kenya's constitution requires the government to ensure that no more than two-thirds of any public body comes from one gender.
