Kano Islamic police detain Muslims for eating during Ramadan

Islamic police caught twenty-five Muslims breaking Ramadan rules in Kano, northern Nigeria. Twenty ate food during daylight hours, and five sold food when fasting should happen. Deputy commander Mujahid Aminudeen told reporters these arrests started when Ramadan began Saturday. He stressed they only target Muslims, not people from other faiths.

Eating during Ramadan daylight hours upsets many Muslims. The deputy commander called it heartbreaking to see adults ignore this important practice. Everyone arrested must face a Sharia court for their actions. The punishment will match what judges think they deserve. Many arrests happen because regular citizens call the police after seeing someone eat.

People feel angry when they spot others eating publicly during the holy month. They call authorities, who rush to make arrests. The police also grabbed people with banned haircuts, those showing knees in short pants, and drivers who mixed men and women as passengers. Last year, offenders walked free after promising to fast, but this year, everyone must stand before judges. No exceptions exist this time around.

Islamic law came to twelve northern Nigerian states about twenty years ago. It works like regular laws but only applies to Muslims, not Christians. Muslims consider Ramadan special because they believe Prophet Muhammad first received their holy book during this time. Daytime fasting is one of five core Muslim duties. The fasting month lasts about thirty days and should finish on March 30.
