The government is considering two ways to fix the Karuma Bridge. They may close it all the way or just part of it and let small cars pass on one side. The bridge opened for small cars in December 2024. This was good for people in Northern Uganda. They could travel for Christmas. But the bridge is not all done. Some parts still need work. The government did not have all the things they needed to finish it. Susan Kataike works for the government. She said they needed to fix the expansion joints. They have the parts they need now, but they stopped working because children are going back to school. The government team is considering what to do. They may close the bridge all the way to fix it quickly, or they may fix it and let cars go at the same time. The team will tell the government what they think is best. Some leaders in Northern Uganda are worried. They do not want the bridge to close because they say it would hurt the economy there. Gilbert Olanya is a leader from Kilak County North. He said Northern Uganda had a hard time when the bridge was closed before, and he does not want that to happen again. Other leaders from nearby places feel the same way. They say closing the bridge made the government get less money. They are afraid it will make things even harder for people. Washington Ocaya is a leader from Karuma. He is not sure if the government used the money well to build the bridge. The bridge cost 11 billion shillings. He wonders if it was worth it if they keep having to close it. The government will soon decide whether to close the bridge all the way or just part of it. The leaders are talking a lot about what to do. They want the government to consider how it will affect people before they decide. Many people need the Karuma Bridge. It is important for the economy in Northern Uganda. If the government closes it again, some people may get very upset.
