A company boss got conned out of more than RM300,000 after falling for a fake investment scheme he found on Facebook. The 44-year-old man saw the dodgy ad in mid-May and thought he could make easy money. He contacted the scammers through WhatsApp who promised him daily returns of 10 percent on his investment. The victim believed their lies and started sending money right away. Kedah police say the man finally reported the crime on Monday afternoon when he realized he had been tricked. The greedy scammers took RM302,100 from the businessman between May 14 and June 17. He made 18 separate payments to three different bank accounts during the month-long con job. The fraudsters kept asking for more cash and promised bigger returns each time. Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Loi Yew Lik says the victim became suspicious when they demanded extra funds for him to withdraw his profits and original money. The man finally woke up to the scam when they kept making excuses about why he could not get his money back. Police warn people to check before sending money to strangers who promise quick profits. The public can verify suspicious deals through the Semak Mule app or the JSJK PDRM Facebook page. People can also call the National Scam Response Centre at 997 for help. Loi says these Facebook investment scams are becoming more common across Malaysia. The police continue hunting for the criminals who stole the businessman's life savings.
