Kenya's Foreign Affairs official Korir Sing'oei called Vietnam's Deputy Minister on Sunday about Margaret Nduta. Vietnam might execute this Kenyan citizen soon. The Vietnam official, Nguyen Minh Hang, told him they're looking at Kenya's request right now. Kenya asked Vietnam earlier to pause the execution. This would give both countries time to work through the issue together. Sing'oei shared that many Kenyans feel worried about what might happen to Nduta. He thanked the Vietnam Deputy Minister for considering their petition seriously. Kenya's office in Bangkok continues to track the situation closely. This marks the first time Kenya's government has publicly responded after many people asked them to step in. Sing'oei wrote online that Nduta faces a tough situation, but Kenya keeps trying everything possible to help her. He wrote this after seeing an open letter from Senator Richard Onyonka to President Ruto. Senator Onyonka sent his letter on March 14, asking President Ruto to seek mercy for Nduta. Vietnam sentenced the 37-year-old Kenyan to death for carrying drugs. Her execution was planned for Sunday. The Senator respected Vietnam's courts but wanted Ruto to talk with Vietnamese leaders, United Nations officials, and human rights groups. He hoped they could reduce her sentence or bring her back to Kenya instead.
