Kenya lost a respected diplomat when Ambassador Boaz Mbaya died on Sunday morning. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi shared the sad news about his friend and mentor. Mudavadi said the Valogooli community had lost an important leader who helped many people. The two men worked together and trusted each other for many years. Mudavadi remembered their last meeting when Mbaya visited his office last October. Mbaya worked as a diplomat for almost forty years serving Kenya around the world. He represented the country as ambassador to France, Ethiopia and Tanzania during his career. The veteran diplomat also worked as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He helped create Kenya's policies for dealing with other countries. After he retired from government work, Mbaya stayed busy leading other former ambassadors. The retired diplomat wrote a book about Kenya's foreign relations that came out in 2019. His book looked at how Kenya's diplomacy changed since the country became independent. Mbaya wrote about the problems Kenya faced after the 2007 election violence. He explained how Kenya fought against the International Criminal Court charges. The book showed how African countries worked together to challenge Western influence. Mbaya kept working on important projects even after leaving government service. He recently helped opposition leader Raila Odinga try to become head of the African Union Commission. Fellow diplomats and government officials will miss his wisdom and experience. Kenya's foreign affairs community mourns the loss of one of their most skilled members.
