Kenya Purges 84 CEOs in Massive Government Shake-Up

Kenya Plans Major Shake-up of State Agencies.

The Kenyan government announced a massive overhaul of state corporations that could affect up to 84 top leaders. The Cabinet approved these changes on Tuesday.

The plan will merge 42 agencies into 20 new ones, close nine groups, move their work to government offices, and shut down 16 more because they are outdated.

Many agency leaders face job losses. These include former governors and members of parliament who got board positions after losing elections.

Several agency heads must compete to keep their jobs. Geoffrey Monari from the University Fund and Charles Ringera from the Higher Education Loans Board will vie for one position. The same applies to road authority chiefs Philemon Kandie and Silas Kinoti.

The changes target groups that handle similar work. For example, three separate funds for women, youth, and small loans will become one organization. Education oversight bodies will also merge into a single unit.

Some leaders will lose their positions as their agencies close down. These include Seth Onyango, who leads the Tsetse Fly Council, and Margaret Kiogora from President's Award Kenya.

The government tried to calm fears about job losses. State House spokesman Hussein Mohamed said regular workers will keep their jobs in public service. He explained these changes will help save money and improve services.

Former political leaders who chair these agencies face uncertain futures. They include former MP Joshua Kutuny and former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata supported the decision. He said many agencies waste public money without helping the country.

The government hopes these changes will improve agency work and reduce their dependence on public funding. To this end, it plans to restructure six more groups.
