Kenya steps up to tackle gambling addiction

Kenya health officials want to help people stop gambling. Public Health leader Mary Muriuki worries about young Kenyans hooked on games like Aviator. The ministry created a team to fight this growing problem. They set up a phone line for anyone needing help with betting issues. School counselors will support students who gamble.

The government plans to teach communities about online betting dangers. They will study how many Kenyans have gambling problems. The Social Health Authority now covers addiction treatment costs. People can visit approved centers for therapy. Muriuki asks families affected by gambling to use these important services.

Different groups joined forces under mental health experts to address this crisis. They will run special programs during Mental Health Month in May. Counties across Kenya will hold events about gambling addiction from May 12-18. Reports show many young people face money troubles from betting. Some even consider suicide because of gambling debts.

Kenyans spent over 766 billion shillings on gambling last year, which is 2.1 billion daily, or 24,000 every second. The average better spends 1,825 shillings monthly. A recent study found that nearly 83 percent of Kenyans surveyed had placed bets before.
