Kenya will see less rain across most areas by mid-week, according to the Meteorological Department. The rain plans to make a comeback this weekend, though. From March 11 to 17, 2025, you can expect rainfall over highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi. The Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, Coast, and parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya will also see some rain. Rain will lighten up mid-week but start falling harder again by the weekend. The weather office warns that heavy downpours might happen at the beginning and end of the week. Some places will stay pretty hot - the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya will see temperatures above 30°C during the day. At night, it'll feel chilly in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, Central Rift Valley, and around Mt. Kilimanjaro, with temperatures dropping under 10°C. Weather experts advise Kenyans to stay informed and take safety steps, especially if they live where heavy rain or big temperature changes happen often. From Sunday evening until Tuesday, Nairobi and many parts of Kenya experienced heavy rains. The weather forecast for March 2025, released on February 28, predicted near-to-above-average rainfall for several regions and below-average rainfall for others. David Gikungu, Director of Meteorological Services, encouraged farmers to prepare and talk with local extension officers. These rains will help the dry, dusty country feel much better. The Met Department says the expected rainfall comes from something called the Madden-Julian Oscillation. This MJO creates patterns of clouds, rain, and storms that travel east along the equator every 30 to 60 days. When the MJO visits an area, it brings more rain and storms. After it leaves, everything becomes drier and hotter. David Gikungu explained the MJO should reach phase two from the second week of March, possibly causing earlier-than-expected rain in some parts of Kenya.
