Armed attackers shot a Kenyan cop dead at the border with Somalia. These gunmen came from Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency, known as NISA. They surprised five Border Police Unit officers guarding a checkpoint between Kenya and Somalia. About twenty NISA members attacked the Kenyan team at border point 4. They fired weapons directly at the officers last Friday, March 14. The bullets killed Officer Dennis Omari right away. A second officer took a shot in his upper left arm. Doctors at Mandera Referral Hospital treated his wounds, and he remains stable. The other Kenyan officers ducked for cover during the attack. The shooters grabbed two weapons from the Kenyan police - a G3 rifle loaded with sixty bullets and an AK47 containing thirty bullets. Police believe revenge motivated this attack. Last month, Kenyan authorities arrested terror suspects who tried to kidnap Chinese nationals working in Mandera town. The brother of one suspect works for NISA and planned this border assault. Somalia has not yet made any statement about these actions. High-ranking police officials visited the scene as part of their investigation. Fear spread through the area as people worried more attacks might happen. Police promised justice for the slain officer. Earlier arrests included the Assistant Chief of Bula power region in Mandera Township. Officials charged him with helping process fake Kenyan IDs for two foreign terror suspects. These individuals, Isack Mohammed Abdi and Noor Yakub Ali planned to kidnap foreigners building a sewer line. The local administrator, Yussuf Maalim Issak, allegedly helped them obtain registration papers.
