[QUOTE="Nehanda, post: 24050, member: 2262"] Major Road Project Speeds Ahead in Gambia's Kiang Region. A new road project in Kiang Kabada, south of the South Bank road, promises to transform transportation across The Gambia. The road will link Jappineh, South Soma, and Basse, starting from Kolior. This development aims to connect more than 20 villages, bringing access to previously cut-off areas. Officials shared these details during the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure's national tour of road construction sites. National Road Authority Managing Director Ousman Sanyang reported the project includes 12 roads spanning 102 kilometers. Construction has begun on 11 roads, with crews focusing on base and sub-base work. The project stands out for its rapid progress. Originally set for completion in four years, contractors expect to finish two years early. This acceleration comes from increased investment in equipment and workers, plus a round-the-clock work schedule. Permanent Secretary Mahtar Ceesay praised the project's impact on rural development. The new roads will improve access to farming areas, social services, and business opportunities. These changes could help keep young people in their communities instead of moving to the capital, Banjul. Resident Engineer Ken Johnson outlined the project's three phases. Phase 1 connects Kwinella to Wellingara, Tabanani, and Madina. Phase 2 will reach Sare Sajo, Nioro, and Sare Samba. Phase 3 extends to Missira, Senoba Jonki, and Buiba Mandika. GAMECS Supervising Consultant Mass Faye detailed the road specifications. The design features double surface dressing, measuring 3.5 meters on each side with 1.5-meter shoulders. Safety features include traffic signs, guard rails, and speed bumps. The plan also includes drainage systems with Irish crossings and culverts. Long Jian Construction Company's Managing Director, Hong Feng Niu, expressed gratitude for the project. The Chinese firm has completed several major infrastructure projects in The Gambia, including bridges and roads. Transport Minister Ebrima Sillah led the inspection team, joined by the ministry and road authority officials. The project demonstrates how focused contractors and proper resource allocation can deliver infrastructure improvements ahead of schedule, benefiting local communities through enhanced connectivity and economic growth.
