Kimi Antonelli is one point-scoring finish away from making F1 history. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver won the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and left George Russell 123 points back. With 125 still up for grabs, a ninth-place finish in Mexico City would make the Italian the youngest world champion in the sport's history. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff kept his first radio message brief, treating the win as one more bit of progress. His take changed after the race, though. He rated it as Antonelli's finest drive yet, with the young star in full control despite a tire choice that put him at a clear risk. Before the race, the title math had been quite harsh. Antonelli needed a win, Russell had to place ninth or worse, and Lewis Hamilton could finish no higher than fifth. Mercedes gave that mix of results a chance in the low single digits. And the car had hardly been great. An aero upgrade from Malaysia had made the Mercedes W17 hard to handle, even as the team's data showed gains in speed. Red Bull and Max Verstappen had held an edge in Malaysia and Singapore, leaving Mercedes with work to do. Ferrari led all three practice runs at Circuit of The Americas, while Verstappen stayed close. Then Antonelli nailed his first lap in the final qualifying session and took pole. A late error kept him from going faster, but his first effort had already done the job. Wolff felt Antonelli had found the right way to drive the tricky car. Mercedes planned to study the data to learn why he got far more pace from the upgrade than expected. Race strategy was the next test. Antonelli began on medium tires, while the other front-runners chose soft rubber for better launch grip. Austin's steep climb into Turn 1 made that a real gamble. Yet Antonelli got away cleanly and built a lead while Verstappen and Charles Leclerc fought behind him. Even Verstappen asked his Red Bull crew where the Mercedes had an edge, but he had no way to close the gap. Red Bull went for two pit stops to put pressure on the leader. Mercedes stayed with one, as race engineer Peter Bonnington urged Antonelli to hit his planned lap times and keep his tires in shape. After his stop, Antonelli sat fourth, with Verstappen and Leclerc ahead due to their pit tactics. No panic from Mercedes. The team stuck with its plan, and Antonelli passed Leclerc before his rivals made their next stops. Fresh tires could not save the chase. Bonnington first gave Antonelli lap-by-lap pace reports, then kept him aware of his lead. He crossed the line 13 seconds clear, delighted to win again after three races without a victory. Russell had a far rougher run, taking eighth after he failed to get past Oscar Piastri in a slower McLaren. That result gave Mercedes another reason to study how Antonelli had made the same car work. Wolff even ranked Austin above Antonelli's Monza victory, where the Italian had gone from 19th on the grid to first at his home race. Only John Watson's charge from 22nd at Long Beach in 1983 had beaten that feat. Antonelli saw a key difference between the wins. Monza had offered a faster car and an easier track for passing. Austin called for steady gains through the weekend, smart tire care, and clean work from both driver and crew. Mexico is the next stop, with Russell and Hamilton still alive in the title race on paper. Antonelli has finished below ninth just once after reaching the flag this season, when a wheel rim fault and a penalty left him 15th at Silverstone. Wolff has already joked about a tequila party in Mexico or a Caipirinha party in Brazil if the title takes another race. Antonelli, meanwhile, had told his boss before Austin that he wanted to enjoy the drive rather than think about the points race. That calm approach got Wolff's approval. His advice was to keep having fun with the job, even as Antonelli gets close to the biggest prize in Formula 1.
