The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, has approved the United Democratic Alliance's (UDA) plan to change its leadership. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will replace Rigathi Gachagua as the party's deputy leader.

The plan to replace Gachagua has been in the works for months. On November 11, 2023, UDA's National Executive Committee (NEC) agreed to remove him as deputy party leader. They decided this because Gachagua had become Kenya's deputy president. According to UDA's constitution, he could no longer serve as the party's deputy leader.

Gachagua was impeached as deputy president by the National Assembly on October 17, 2023. He was accused of not respecting President William Ruto, who is also the UDA party leader. The Senate supported the impeachment.

After this, President Ruto chose Kindiki as the new deputy president. This completed the change in leadership.

The notice about UDA's leadership change follows the rules in Section 20 (1) (c) of the Political Parties Act. It comes after UDA merged with the Amani National Congress (ANC), and as a result, some ANC leaders joined UDA.
