Death Stranding 2 went through many changes during development. COVID changed Kojima's original vision for the project completely. He first planned a smaller expansion about exploring different continents. Later he switched to making a full sequel before scrapping that idea as well. The current game keeps only the opening scene from those earlier concepts.
