Music research generally reserves polyrhythm for simultaneous, nonharmonically related pulse structures sharing a common cycle, while polymeter describes competing metrical patterns that can span several cycles. The distinction is not academic fussiness. It changes what you listen for. A compact 3-against-4 pulse relationship produces an immediately recognizable cross-rhythm, while two long patterns with different step counts may reveal their tension gradually across several bars. Set an unusual number of steps, generate a sparse distribution, then edit individual hits instead of accepting the mathematical output as finished music. Rotation can move the relationship against the downbeat without changing the internal spacing. Several independent Euclidean blocks can become dense very quickly. More complexity is not automatically more groove. If the kick, percussion, bass, and chord tracks all fight for a different pulse at once, the technical independence is working perfectly even while the musical hierarchy disappears. KVEIK follows host transport and loop position rather than letting each track run as an isolated free-running clock. You can return to a project location and expect the rhythmic relationship to be tied to the same timeline position. Experimentation becomes less fragile. Change a block from 16 steps to 15, audition the new interaction, then jump around the arrangement without waiting for several free-running sequencers to find their places again. The mismatch belongs to the pattern design, not to an accidental startup offset. Playback direction adds another layer without changing the underlying clock relationship. KVEIK supports forward, reverse, ping-pong, random, leapfrog, and odd/even behaviors, and direction can be set for a block or an arrangement instance. A stable cycle can therefore produce a different ordering of events while its duration remains anchored. A 15-step percussion figure beside a 16-step bass pattern will keep changing their point of contact before the larger relationship repeats. Reverse one arrangement instance and the order of the percussion events changes again, but the host still determines when the block begins and how long its grid occupies. For tighter control, start with one mismatched pair and mute everything else. Listen through enough repetitions to hear where the cycles reunite, then add the next track only if it creates a useful accent before that reunion.
