You might not realize it, but you've got the power to take the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to court if they lock you up when they shouldn't. Having your freedom snatched away is a nasty thing that's always been seen as a major wrong.
When a cop is on the job and takes it too far or unfairly keeps someone from going where they want, that officer and the whole ZRP could be on the hook for what's called the delict of unlawful arrest and detention.
For a police officer to make a legal arrest, they have to first show a good reason. Section 25 of the Criminal Procedure & Evidence Act says that a good reason is suspecting that someone is breaking the law right in front of the cop or having cause to think they've done something listed in the First or Ninth Schedule.
If a cop arrests somebody and the situation doesn't match up with Section 25, it's considered an unlawful arrest. The person who was unjustly arrested and stopped from moving around freely has the right to file a claim for money against the individual officer and the ZRP as a whole.
