Push a saturated red to its limit on an RWBG panel, and it drifts toward pink. The stripe layout builds color additively from three emitters instead, so saturation holds up when you turn things up. It also changes the physical rhythm of the panel. Four subpixels per pixel means red, white, blue, green repeats in an order no font engine was ever written for. Three in a straight line means it does. Fewer layers, lower drive voltage, and a new blue emitter carrying more of the load. [HEADING=2]Font engines never expected a fourth subpixel[/HEADING] Subpixel antialiasing is a trick left over from the move off CRTs. Windows ClearType assumes every pixel is a left-to-right run of red, green, and blue, then lights individual subpixels to fake resolution the panel does not physically have. Feed it an RWBG panel, and the assumption collapses. You get the shadowy, over-sharpened look, plus red edges on one side of a highlighted word and bright cyan-green on the other. Viewing distance is what turns this into a monitor problem rather than a television problem. LG leans on reduced color bleeding at close range when it pitches the stripe layout, and sitting two feet from a screen is exactly where a subpixel artifact stops hiding. Most workarounds are bad. Switching ClearType off kills the fringing but leaves letter weight and spacing looking inconsistent, and third-party rendering tools only get you partway. Scaling everything up genuinely helps, though buying a high-resolution monitor and then spending resolution to hide an artifact is a strange use of money. Apple stepped out of the argument in 2018 by removing subpixel antialiasing from macOS altogether, betting that pixel density would carry the load on its own. Mac users on a 27-inch 4K screen were already in decent shape. Windows users were not, and this panel is aimed straight at them. [HEADING=2]Brightness is what you trade for sharper edges[/HEADING] Losing the white subpixel costs real output. HDR peak lands at 1,000 nits on a 1.5 percent window, down from 1,500 nits on recent white-subpixel Tandem WOLED panels. Full-screen white sits at 250 nits, and a 10 percent window manages 500. Pixel density comes in around 160 per inch by LG's own count, a meaningful jump over the 27-inch 1440p panels most OLED owners have been staring at. Those brightness figures are respectable rather than spectacular. If you want the loudest HDR highlights available, this is not your panel. If [B]how clean small text looks on a desktop OLED[/B] decides your purchase, the trade is easy. There is a dual-mode switch too, dropping to 1080p at 480Hz for competitive shooters, so the panel is not conceding the gaming side to keep the office side happy.
