Lightning kills teacher, staff, pupils hurt in school

Lightning struck a primary school in Uganda's Masaka city on Tuesday, killing three educators and leaving 15 students hospitalized with serious injuries. The devastating electrical discharge hit Sserinya Community Primary School during an intense rainstorm that pummeled the region for roughly 90 minutes.

Deputy headteacher Joseph Kabanda reported a thunderous explosion near a tree, followed immediately by students screaming as staff and pupils collapsed unconscious. The powerful electrical strike decimated the classroom block, creating widespread panic among survivors and witnesses at the educational facility.

Emergency medical personnel swiftly transported all victims to St Joseph's Hospital Kitovu for urgent treatment. Joseph Yiga, the school's director, stated that medical teams were working diligently to stabilize those affected and ensure their survival after the traumatic incident.

Health workers subsequently reported significant improvements, noting that most pupils had regained consciousness and were no longer facing immediate life-threatening conditions. Some students experienced temporary shock and paralysis but showed promising signs of recovery as medical professionals continued their comprehensive care.
