Night guards caught a thief red-handed stealing copper cables in Hatfield this past weekend. The 29-year-old man later told police someone promised him $25 for the job. He planned to spend $20 on his apartment rent and put $5 toward his kid's school bills. His midnight scheme fell apart fast when local security spotted him sneaking around.
The action happened early Sunday morning, around 2 a.m., on St Andrews Road. Security guards noticed Erick Matuzhayi hiding near St Andrews Close, carrying a big sack. They checked closer and found TelOne copper wires inside the bag. Matuzhayi tried running away when he saw the guards coming toward him.
His escape attempt failed quickly. The determined guards chased him down and tackled him after a brief fight. They held him until help arrived as neighbors came outside to see what happened. Guards recorded Matuzhayi explaining his failed crime plan during the arrest.
On the recording, he named his contact as "Baba vaNyasha." This mystery man allegedly offered cash for the stolen cables. "Baba vaNyasha asked me to find these copper cables for $25," Matuzhayi admitted. He mentioned his home in Epworth, where the rent money would go. Police took him to Hatfield station after his capture.
