Sports Veterans Honored at Munyonyo Beach Resort.
Veteran sports journalist marks his upcoming 62nd birthday by reflecting on Uganda's rich sports history. The milestone puts him past the public service retirement age of 60.
Sports leaders gathered Sunday at Ddungu Resort Beach in Munyonyo. Property developer Roger Ddungu hosted the event to celebrate long-serving sports figures.
Ddungu led several sports bodies in Uganda. He served as president of swimming and weightlifting federations. He later headed the Uganda Boxing Federation from 2006 to 2009 and the Uganda Olympic Committee from 2009 to 2012.
The event brought together members of the Lugogo Elders Sports Club. Attendees included former football chief John Baptist Semanobe, musician-turned-footballer Moses Matovu, and sports stars Hassan Mutaasa and Fred Mukasa.
Buganda royalty graced the celebration. Princes Joseph Ndaula, Dr. Dan Kajumba, and Princess Diana Teyeggala joined the gathering. Senior police officers Moses Kafeero Kabugo and Dr. John Kamya also attended.
The club began in the 1980s when national team players trained at Lugogo grounds. As interest dropped, smaller groups formed. Leaders then united these groups into the Lugogo Elders Sports Club, naming Ddungu as patron.
Ddungu presented awards to sports icons at the event. Former Cranes players Polly Ouma, Fred Mukasa, and Moses Matovu received honors. Referees Catherine Adipo and Aggrey Kibenge earned recognition.
The host praised the journalist's decades of sports coverage. This recognition marked a special moment in the writer's long career covering Ugandan sports since the 1980s.
The celebration highlighted enduring bonds in Uganda's sports community. It honored those who shaped the nation's athletic legacy through their dedication and service.
