Malawi braces for no power this Easter

Malawians face Easter weekend without 135.1 megawatts of electricity as EGENCO performs maintenance on Nkula A and B Power Stations. The work starts on Thursday at 10 p.m. and continues until Monday at 5 p.m. EGENCO needs to remove leftover structures and fix equipment to make power generation more efficient. The company explained that workers never completely took out the cofferdam around Nkula A intake mouth after the modernization projects finished. This problem reduces water intake and limits how much power Nkula A machines can create.

During repairs, EGENCO will lower the water level at Nkula Power Station to reach the remaining cofferdam parts. All electricity production at Nkula must stop throughout this period. The public can expect other facilities to keep running as normal. These include Tedzani, Kapichira, and Wovwe Hydro Power Stations. Diesel peaking plants will also continue producing electricity during the maintenance shutdown. The company aims to improve overall system performance through these essential repairs.
