KARONGA, Malawi—Karonga Police have arrested a 37-year-old man named Sute Mwenefumbo. He is accused of possessing K30,000 in counterfeit banknotes while staying at a motel in the district.

According to Karonga Police Public Relations Officer Constable Margret Msiska, the suspect paid for a K6,000 room with two K5,000 notes. He received change. The receptionist became suspicious of the notes and alerted the police.

When detectives arrived at the motel, Mwenefumbo was already being held by community members. He had allegedly used another fake K5,000 note to buy beer at a nearby store.

Police searched the suspect and found two more counterfeit K5,000 notes. The total amount seized was K30,000. The notes had different serial numbers.

Msiska said investigations are underway to determine the source of the counterfeit money. The notes will be sent to the Reserve Bank of Malawi for analysis.

Mwenefumbo, from Kwiyula Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District, will soon appear in court. He faces charges of selling articles bearing currency designs and possessing counterfeit notes, which are contrary to Section 382 of the Penal Code.
