Kenya's Ex-Top Judge Speaks Out Against Violence. David Maraga used to be Kenya's Chief Justice, which is like being the top judge in the country. As the new year started, he had an important message for Kenyans. Maraga is very worried. He said many bad things happened to Kenyans this year. People were hurt and killed. Some were taken away by the government and never seen again. Maraga said this has to stop. He wants Kenya to follow its Constitution. The Constitution is a set of rules that the whole country agreed to follow back in 2010. "We have to stand up for what's right," Maraga said. "We can't let our politics be so mean and cruel." He said the Constitution was supposed to improve Kenya, stop people in power from doing whatever they wanted, and ensure everyone's fair treatment. Maraga talked about the big protests that happened in June and July. He said people were upset because their lives were hard. They couldn't find good jobs, and schools and hospitals needed help. "We have to fix these problems," Maraga said. "We've done it before. We can do it again." He said Kenyans have been very brave. They keep telling the government to do the right thing, and even when it's hard, they don't give up. Maraga said everyone who works for the government needs to be careful. They can't misuse their power, and they have to be fair and kind to everyone. As the new year starts, Maraga wants Kenyans to remember the promises they made 14 years ago. He said the country chose a good path back then: to be honest and work hard. "We have to make those choices real in our lives," he said. "We have to be fair and humble. We have to tell the truth and fight for justice. We have to respect everyone." Maraga said 2025 should be a year in which people who did bad things in 2024 are held responsible. He said Kenya needs to stick to its Constitution. That's the only way to ensure the country's good future. He ended by wishing everyone a happy and successful new year and saying God should bless Kenya and all its people. Maraga's message is important. Kenya has had a tough year, and many people are hurting. But Maraga believes the country can do better. He thinks that if everyone works together and follows the rules, Kenya can be a place where everyone is safe and happy. It won't be easy. But Maraga thinks Kenyans are strong enough to make it happen. He wants the country to start the new year with hope and determination.
