Justin Trudeau stepped down as Canadian Prime Minister on January 6 under pressure from his Liberal Party members. He ended his nine-year leadership but said he would stay until the party picked someone new. Parliament activities paused until March 24, 2025. Trudeau explained he needed to leave because internal fights prevented him from being the best choice for the upcoming election. He decided to quit after the party held a nationwide selection process. The Liberal Party selected Mark Carney as their new leader on March 9. Carney, an economist without previous political experience, became Canada's prime minister on Friday, March 12. During his first speech, he promised Canada would never become part of the United States. Carney was born on March 16, 1965, to parents who both taught school. He came from Fort Smith in Northwest Territories and grew up playing hockey in Edmonton, Alberta. Carney attended St. Francis Xavier High School before winning a scholarship to America. He earned his economics degree from Harvard University and then moved to the United Kingdom for further education. He finished his economics doctorate at Oxford University in 1995. His wife, Diana Fox Carney, works as an economist and writes books. Carney started his career making money before joining Canadian public service. He became the Liberal Party leader earlier this month. Before leading Canada, Carney ran the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis. He helped protect jobs through one of the hardest economic periods in recent history. The Bank of England hired him in 2013, making him the first non-British citizen to lead that 300-year-old institution. He guided the UK economy through Brexit challenges. Later, he worked as UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, bringing nations together against climate change. He also managed investments at Brookfield Asset Management but left both positions for his political career. Carney started his job during a trade fight with President Donald Trump. After his swearing-in ceremony, he said Canadians can build more together than anyone can take away. He plans to keep charging taxes on American products as long as Trump keeps his 25% taxes on Canadian goods not covered by their trade agreement. Canada relies heavily on selling things to America. Money experts warn Canada might face economic troubles if Trump applies all his planned taxes. Many cabinet members who served under Trudeau kept their jobs, especially those who dealt directly with Trump's government.
