Send it backward to an earlier node, and Mela inserts [B]a one-sample feedback delay[/B] before it lands. That single difference separates a clean modulation chain from a feedback loop. It matters more than it sounds. A backward route closes the loop once per sample, tens of thousands of times every second, so small level changes compound quickly. A route you barely raised can turn a soft comb tone into a howl. Every route also carries its own level. That is what keeps the grid workable, because one node can feed another hard and a third one gently at the same time, with no splitter or mixer sitting in between. Most FM tutorials treat algorithms as fixed diagrams you pick from a numbered chart. Matrix has no chart. You draw the routing yourself, which means you can build shapes no classic six-operator layout ever offered, including cross-feedback between two carriers. [HEADING=2]The FM Operator has no ratio dial[/HEADING] This is where old DX7 habits break. Mela's FM Operator carries no ratio, multiply, or transpose control at all. Its carrier frequency comes from the Pitch signal you feed it, so tuning one operator a fifth above another happens outside the operator, in the pitch chain that reaches it. That feels like extra work for about ten minutes. Then you realize those relationships are now modulatable, which a fixed ratio dial never allowed. What the operator does give you is Intensity, which sets the FM modulation depth, the modulation index itself. Level sets carrier amplitude. FM sets the mix between the incoming signal and the operator's own output, which is how you blend a raw input against a modulated version of the same thing. Feedback is the fourth control worth learning early. Positive values add even and odd harmonics, pushing the sine carrier toward a saw shape. Negative values add odd harmonics only, and move it toward something square-like. Two directions, two very different timbres, from one dial. Trigger is the quiet one. It decides whether the carrier phase runs free, resets on every note, follows legato, or starts at random. On short percussive patches, that choice changes the attack of every single note you play. [HEADING=2]Polyphony collapses if a single submodule is mono[/HEADING] Matrix outputs a poly signal only when its input and all of its submodule outputs are poly. One mono submodule sitting in one node quietly drops the entire module to mono. Your chords become a single voice, and nothing on screen warns you. Check that before you blame the routing. It is an easy fault to miss, because a Matrix patch can sound fine on a held test tone and still fall apart the moment you play three notes at once. The output also runs through a built-in hard clipper at +6 dBFS, with an indicator. That ceiling exists because feedback routes build gain faster than you can react to them, and it is a safety net rather than a tone-shaping tool. If the indicator lights during ordinary playing, pull your routing levels down instead of leaving the clipper to do the work for you. The factory patches are the fastest way to see all of this working. FM Piano and FM Keys sit in the Keys folder, FM Bass sits in Bass, and each one shows a node arrangement you can pull apart while it plays. Open one, mute a single route, and listen to what disappears. The FM Bass patch loads noticeably louder than its neighbors, so drop your monitoring level before you audition that one. [/QUOTE]
