The keyboard is commonly a USB peripheral and expects something else to act as the host, which might be a computer, tablet, dedicated host box, or suitably equipped instrument. The awkward detail is Type A versus Type B wiring. Both use tip, ring, and sleeve contacts, but Type A and Type B assign the two MIDI signal connections differently. The MIDI Association standardized the Type A arrangement, while equipment using the older alternative wiring still exists, so an adapter made for one type can be useless with the other. Model names matter more than brand folklore here. Manufacturers have changed designs across product lines, and secondhand gear often arrives without its original breakout adapter. Check the manual for each exact device before replacing cables, because two visually identical 3.5 mm MIDI adapters can be wired differently inside. A straight TRS connection between devices also depends on matching the required wiring. If one unit expects Type A and another expects Type B, buying a nicer stereo cable does not solve the electrical mismatch. You need the correct conversion arrangement rather than a more expensive version of the wrong connection. A headphone extension lead may have three conductors, but its existence does not tell you which MIDI pinout the hardware expects. Confirm the sending port, receiving port, connector type, TRS wiring where relevant, USB role, data-capable cable, and available power before changing MIDI channels or DAW settings.
