Both contain a C major triad, but the second has a different bass note, which the slash notation C/E records. Listen to the change while keeping the upper notes easy to follow on screen. If you're practicing a bass line beneath repeated harmony, losing that slash detail removes useful feedback about the part you're changing. Repeating the same chord name isn't enough to assess that exercise. A ninth adds another possible mismatch between your hands and the label. D is the ninth above C, so a C major triad with an added D contains information that plain C doesn't spell out. When you need to check that added tone, compare the individual notes as well as the chord name. Show Alternate Names lets you see other available names for a detected chord. Use it when the pitches match your intended voicing, but the chosen name describes the combination differently. [HEADING=2]A held label can belong to an earlier chord[/HEADING] Hold Last Chord keeps the most recently detected chord visible when no chord is currently detected. It lets you examine a label after releasing the keys, but an earlier result can look like an answer to your latest attempt. Suppose you play a recognized chord, release it, then try a note combination the application doesn't name. With the hold option enabled, the old label can remain while you're looking at the new notes. Disable it during this check so you can see when recognition stops. MidiStickers deliberately avoids assigning a chord name to every possible pitch combination. A blank result doesn't establish that your combination is musically unusable, and a retained result doesn't establish that the new notes form the previous chord. Keep a note display beside the symbol while you test a troublesome combination. Play it slowly enough to inspect the pitches, and record which notes are present when the label disappears. You now have a specific combination to examine instead of an uncertain impression that the detector sometimes gets confused. [HEADING=2]Two widgets can omit different information[/HEADING] The Staff widget displays incoming MIDI notes, but its own settings affect what you see. Its MIDI Settings tab selects the displayed channels, and single-staff mode can restrict the pitch range. Check those choices before treating the staff as a complete record of your playing. If your controller sends different parts on separate channels, make sure the staff includes the channels carrying the notes you're checking. A hidden left-hand channel would make a bass-note comparison misleading, even though the remaining notation looked perfectly readable. Note spelling needs a separate check. The staff uses the key and harmonic context when choosing enharmonic spellings, so compare the represented pitches before assuming differently written notes indicate different input. Enable note names if reading the notation is slowing you down. The Roman Numeral widget has its own Ignore Inversions setting, which can reduce first- and second-inversion tonic symbols to I. Its analysis also follows the selected key. Restoring slash chords in the Chord Symbol widget doesn't remove the need to inspect these separate choices. For [B]chord labels that leave out the bass[/B], compare the lowest displayed pitch with the inversion detail in each widget. Keep the key fixed while you check, since changing it changes the reference for Roman numeral analysis. If you scroll while hovering over the staff, MidiStickers changes the key signature by adding sharps or flats. An accidental scroll can therefore change the Roman numeral analysis during your comparison. Use the Key Selector to restore the intended key before repeating the voicing. [/QUOTE]
