Military families plant thousands of saplings in annual conservation drive

Military families grabbed their shovels and headed to Yezin Dam yesterday for their annual tree planting party. Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing showed up with his wife Daw Kyu Kyu Hla to dig holes and plant baby trees. The couple kicked off the ceremony near the dam waters where hundreds of military officers and their families gathered. Vice-Senior General Soe Win brought his wife Daw Than Than Nwe along with other top brass and their spouses. Everyone took turns planting different types of tree babies around the designated spots.

The group managed to stick 2,400 new saplings into the ground during the afternoon event. Workers planted 900 teak trees, 600 ironwood trees, 300 gum-kino trees, and 600 mahogany trees across the area. Military families have been doing this environmental work every year since 2011 to help the planet stay green. The dam ecosystem gets better protection each time they add more trees to the landscape. Defense officials believe the annual tradition helps fight climate change and supports the national economy.

Military commands across the country joined the tree planting movement on the same day. Twelve different bases organized their ceremonies and planted 137,186 saplings total. The combined effort from all military units shows how serious defense forces are about environmental protection. These annual ceremonies have produced 206,025 new trees around Yezin Dam over 43 separate events. Military leaders hope their green efforts inspire regular citizens to start planting trees around their neighborhoods.
